The Dassler: Number 23- January 2024. Read on for enough three stripe goodness to satisfy the most obsessive adidas fanatic.
Welcome to The Dassler, Twenty-Third edition.
Happy New Year and welcome to our first edition of The Dassler in 2024, the monthly magazine especially written for (and by) adidas lovers.
Firstly some news, we have decided to go to a monthly Dassler. Partly due to the all time and effort it takes to research, write and produce. We were struggling to produce an edition every 2 weeks. We have full time jobs, families and it just wasn’t manageable. We are sure you can understand our reasons for reducing to a once a month edition.
But this definitely does not mean there’s a reduction in quality or volume of content. In fact it will be a bigger Dassler-You’ll see in this edition there’s plenty more three stripe goodness to read and we’ll be bringing a few more new features as the months go by.
We’ll bring it out on the Third Saturday of each Month-to take your mind off spending all your money on adidas and give you something to do while waiting for the end of the months pay day!
We’re hoping you see this change as value for money and continue to subscribe to our little corner of adidas heaven.
In this edition we have a new regular feature ‘Retro shoe of the month’ where we share a long forgotten Trainer from the mahoosive adidas back catalogue. Woody and Craig share their Top Ten new adidas releases from 2023. We have a reprinted interview with Run DMC on their love affair with the trefoil from 1994. Mad toffee, adifanatic and all round good guy Keith (aka @adi.lads on IG ) shares his adidas Top Ten and Craig reviews the latest adidas drops of note, with some Dassler exclusives!
A massive three-striped thank you for subscribing, it takes a lot of hours to research, write, source and edit The Dassler and your support is very much appreciated.
If this is your first visit then we’d highly recommend you run over to the very beginning (obvs wearing a pair of adidas ZX600)to our earlier issues here.
They’ll be news of the adidas annual very soon(again please be patient-it’s a huge designer job to put this together-subscribers first as promised) and a couple of surprise guest writers for 2024.
This is a monthly newsletter, that will contain ultra rare deadstock trainers, new adidas releases & brand exclusive information from 3 stripe social media giant Craig (@adifamily_ *X & Insta*), adidas oddments & apparel reminiscences written by Woody (@dadidassler *X* & Insta) plus loads of articles from special guest writers and we have some absolute adidas legends as guest writers lined up!
The Story behind the stripes.
adidas Fire-1986
Adidas spent a lot of the 1980’s trying to create cushioning devices for their trainers. Trying to find the upper edge on technology enhanced running experiences (and selling points!). We had the Vario Peg system of the LA, Kegler and Harvard etc, the key system of the APS and the cartridge system of the Fire.
The Fire! Most of you will have never heard of the adidas Fire or it’s cartridge cushioning system.
adidas released the Fire runner way back in 1986, complete with a quite revolutionary, colour coded replaceable cushioning in cartridge form.
As you can see it featured a rather nondescript upper and an ahead-of-its-time midsole. Equipped with varying density foam inserts to allow the runner to adjust firmness in the midsole and the heel.
The Fire failed to capture the imaginations or the wallets of serious runners and the shoe was soon shelved.
You can’t help but feel that the NMD/Micropacer/Boston etc was a continuation of the Fire’s design but obviously not the inserts!
The fact that these are only remembered by a select few is a shame and the Fire certainly belongs with those shoes in the adidas back catalogue that we’d like to see reissued.
